The goal of the thesis is to identify patterns and motives of diversification strategies of internet-based firms. This corporate strategy of entering new markets with new products has mainly focused on conventional firms. The findings suggest that gaining market-power and the reaction to competition and market mechanisms are important motives.

Diversified Bits and Pieces

The title of the present study is: Diversified Bits and Pieces; Patterns and Motives of Diversification Strategies of Online Firms. The title refers to the saying ‘bits and pieces’, small things of different types. The title emphasises the apparent variety in unrelated products and service developed and introduced by online firms on the market.

Graduation Poster

The graduation poster is a brief summary of the whole graduation project. The poster reflects on the literature, methodology and the findings.

Conclusions

The findings suggest that gaining market-power and the reaction to competition and market mechanisms are important motives. The network effect and switching costs both contribute to market power, by locking-in customers. In contrast to the literature study, financial interest is not found to be of significant importance.
